River Cogs are the standard means of heavy transport on most of the rivers in Arland.

The cog is the basic medieval-era sailing ship. It is a singlemasted sailing ship with a round, sturdy hull. It has a partial deck (the waist of the ship is not decked over, but the ends are) and raised bow and stern platforms that are open, as opposed to being enclosed like a true forecastle or sterncastle. It is seaworthy, but not very handy in adverse winds.

Cogs are broad vessles with a flat hull, suspended deck, high sides, a raised fore and aft castle and a single mast (Square or Lateen sail). The flat hull lends itself well to shoreline and river travel. It can be landed on sandbars at lowtide and floated off at high tide.

River Cogs, also called Trade Cogs, will employ a number of rowers to assist in their passage up river or when speed is of importance. These rowers, called Barge-Boys , are controlled by the Oar-Boss and his Beater
