Orphans are the unwanted children left to be raised by another.
Unlike Bastards which are often raised by their mother, Orphans are left to the care of another and are often raised by a religious order.
Because of this they often adopt a suitable surname to designate which order raised them.

Orphans of the Record[]
As one's family name only matters to the high-born nobles, those who have some noble blood within them (bastards) and who are not able to claim their father's name are often given a different surname. Those born and raised within a Priory of Gizad adopt the surname "Grey" as they were raised by the Order of Grey Brothers.
