The Mud Gate is an interance into the city of Kingsport that leads into the lower section of the city's west end as it approaches the Marny River. The Mud Gate is often the first gate that most of the River Cogs head to when coming south out of the North Marches. As the Marny occasionally floods its borders when the snows melt late in winter and the storms arrive early in spring, the lesser pair of the three docks along that side of the city will often fall below the waterline by a few feet.
When the water recedes, the lesser docks are often covered with river mud and filth and no one is sent to clean them before the ships start to arrive and tie up to them once more. This often means that the river mud is tracked by pack animals and wharf workers along the docks and through the gate leaving a muddy trail behind them.
Beyond the Mud Gate lies the western edge of the city known as Barrel Bottom, a rough and poor area of the city that most move through quickly.
